How We Helped a Personal Injury Law Firm Double Organic Traffic in 8 Months
Coastal Injury Law was a 6-attorney personal injury firm in Orange County, California. They’d been in business for 12 years, had a solid reputation, and got most of their cases from referrals and existing clients. But they were losing market share to newer firms that seemed to appear everywhere in search results.
In January 2024, they hired us to improve their organic search visibility. Here’s exactly what we did, the metrics we tracked, and the results they achieved.
The Baseline: Where Coastal Injury Law Started
Month 1 Metrics (January 2024)
- Organic monthly sessions: 512
- Cases from organic per month: 3–4
- Keywords ranking (top 50): 23 keywords
- Domain Authority: 28
- Local pack position: Position 8–12 for “personal injury lawyer Orange County”
- Top landing pages: Homepage, “Personal Injury” overview, individual attorney pages
Coastal’s existing site was a static brochure with 8 pages total. It had basic SEO (meta tags, mobile responsive) but no content strategy, no local optimization, and no link building program.
Why They Were Losing Ground
Analysis showed:
- No practice area architecture: Their site had “Personal Injury” as one page. Competitors had separate pages for car accidents, slip-and-fall, medical malpractice, etc.
- Weak local SEO: Their GBP profile was incomplete (missing hours, service area not set). They appeared in local pack results but weren’t competitive.
- Minimal backlinks: 12 referring domains total, mostly low-authority directories.
- No content strategy: No blog. No resources. Competitors were publishing 4–8 posts per month.
- Technical issues: Slow page load (4.2 seconds), crawl errors in Google Search Console, no structured data.
The Strategy: What We Built
Phase 1: Technical Audit & Site Architecture (Weeks 1–4)
We conducted a technical SEO audit and found:
- 44 crawl errors (mostly orphaned pages, redirect chains)
- Missing schema markup (LocalBusiness, Organization, Article types)
- Page load time averaging 4.2 seconds (target: under 2 seconds)
- No XML sitemap
- Duplicate content (mobile and desktop versions weren’t properly canonicalized)
Fixes applied:
- Added JSON-LD schema for LocalBusiness, Lawyer, and Organization types
- Fixed all crawl errors and redirect chains
- Optimized images (compressed to 40% of original size)
- Minified CSS and JavaScript
- Implemented lazy loading for images below fold
- Created proper XML sitemap
- Page load time improved to 1.8 seconds
Result after 4 weeks: No ranking improvements yet, but site health improved. Crawl errors dropped to 0. Google started crawling more pages weekly.
Phase 2: Practice Area Architecture (Weeks 5–8)
We mapped out a practice area strategy. Coastal wanted to target:
- Car accident / motor vehicle injuries
- Slip and fall / premises liability
- Medical malpractice
- Dog bite / animal injury
- Wrongful death
We built 12 new pages:
- 5 main practice area pages: Car accident (2,400 words), Slip and fall (2,200 words), Medical malpractice (2,100 words), Dog bite (1,800 words), Wrongful death (2,000 words)
- 5 specific injury pages: “Whiplash after car accident,” “Broken bones slip and fall,” “Surgical error malpractice,” “Dog bite scarring,” “Loss of consortium wrongful death”
- 2 comparison pages: “Car accident vs. personal injury claim,” “Slip and fall damages explained”
Each page included:
- Detailed explanation of the injury type and legal claim
- Common questions (FAQ format)
- Typical damage ranges (with disclaimer)
- Case examples (anonymized, demonstrating claim types)
- Links to relevant attorney bios (internal linking)
- Call-to-action for free consultation
All pages were optimized for search intent. “Car accident lawyer” pages focused on getting the hire; “Types of car accident injuries” pages provided education. Both served a purpose in the buyer journey.
Phase 3: Local SEO Optimization (Weeks 5–12)
Google Business Profile optimization:
- Completed all GBP fields (photos, business description, hours, service area)
- Added all 5 practice areas as “services”
- Posted weekly (case tips, client testimonials, practice area updates)
- Ensured hours included weekends and evening availability
- Added embedded Google review widget to website
Local citations:
We identified and claimed/created listings on 45 directories:
- Avvo (top legal directory, high authority)
- Justia
- FindLaw
- Nolo
- Yelp
- Google Maps (GBP)
- Better Business Bureau
- State Bar of California
- Local chamber of commerce (Orange County, Irvine, Santa Ana)
- Local business directories (30+ others)
Every citation included consistent Name, Address, Phone (NAP) information. This consistency signals to Google that Coastal is a legitimate, established business.
Review generation campaign:
We sent post-settlement surveys to clients asking them to leave a Google review (ethically, not incentivizing). This generated 12–15 new reviews per month.
Result: GBP reviews increased from 8 (mostly old, 3–4 stars) to 45+ (average 4.8 stars) by month 6.
Phase 4: Link Building & Authority (Weeks 9–32)
We launched a strategic outreach campaign targeting:
- Local media: Orange County Register, local news outlets (” Personal Injury Lawyer Discusses New California Law” type coverage)
- Legal directories: ABA (American Bar Association), State Bar referrals
- Local business sites: Chamber of commerce, local business journals
- Legal blogs & publications: Outreach to legal news sites for guest posts on injury law trends
- Local resource sites: Car accident prevention guides, health sites mentioning injury recovery
We built 45 editorial links total (8+ per month average):
- 8 links from high-authority legal directories (Avvo, Justia, Nolo guest posts)
- 12 links from local Orange County news / business publications
- 15 links from legal blogs and injury resource sites
- 10 links from medical/health sites (recovery resources, physical therapy guides)
Domain Authority increased from 28 to 38 over 8 months.
Phase 5: Content & Blog Strategy (Ongoing)
Starting month 2, we published 2–3 blog posts per week:
- “How long does a personal injury case take?” (750 words, legal process explained)
- “5 things NOT to post on social media after an accident” (850 words, advice applicable to all cases)
- “Medical records in personal injury claims: what you need to know” (1,100 words, detailed guide)
- “Settlement negotiation: what insurance companies don’t tell you” (950 words, insider tips)
- “Comparative negligence in California: how it affects your case” (1,200 words, legal education)
- “Top 10 reasons personal injury claims get denied” (1,600 words, comprehensive guide)
Blog content served dual purpose: ranked for informational keywords AND built internal linking (each post linked to 3–5 relevant practice area pages).

What Drove Results: Key Factors
1. Practice Area Pages (Biggest Impact)
The 12 new practice area pages generated the most traffic. Why?
- They targeted specific injury types with clear search intent
- They provided detailed information (2,000+ words each), which Google rewards
- They attracted long-tail keywords (“whiplash from car accident” is easier to rank for than “car accident lawyer”)
- They provided internal linking opportunities (every practice area page linked to attorney bios, driving authority throughout the site)
Contribution to final traffic: ~50% of the final 1,105 monthly sessions.
2. Local Pack Dominance (Second Biggest Impact)
Local pack optimization (GBP, citations, reviews) drove:
- Consistent top-5 positions in local searches
- Higher click-through rates (top-3 in local pack = 40%+ CTR vs. position 10 = 2%)
- Better lead quality (“personal injury lawyer near me” converts better than generic “personal injury lawyer”)
Contribution to final traffic: ~30% of the final 1,105 monthly sessions.
3. Blog Content & Internal Linking (Ongoing Growth)
Blog posts ranked for long-tail, informational keywords and drove internal linking:
- “How much can I get for a car accident?” ranked position 3 for a high-volume keyword
- That post linked to the “Car Accident” practice area page 5 times, passing authority
- The practice area page ranked higher as a result
Contribution to final traffic: ~15% of the final 1,105 monthly sessions.
4. Technical SEO & Site Health (Foundation)
Fixing crawl errors, improving page speed, and adding schema markup didn’t directly generate traffic, but they enabled everything else. Without technical fixes, the practice area pages wouldn’t have been crawled or indexed effectively.
Contribution: Foundation that made other improvements possible.
Challenges We Overcame
Challenge 1: Content Freshness
Personal injury law changes constantly. New cases, new California laws, updated settlement data. We solved this by:
- Scheduling quarterly content audits to update practice area pages with new precedents and case law
- Publishing weekly blog posts to keep the site active and fresh
- Adding “Last updated” dates to major pages (signals to Google the content is current)
Challenge 2: Competitive Market
Orange County is competitive. Larger firms (with bigger budgets) were also pursuing SEO. We won by:
- Focusing on long-tail, lower-competition keywords first (“slip and fall lawyer Irvine” instead of “personal injury lawyer”)
- Creating more detailed, authoritative content than competitors
- Building more local citations (45+ directories vs. competitors’ average of 20)
- Consistently executing month over month (many competitors didn’t maintain their SEO efforts)
Challenge 3: GBP Review Management
At baseline, Coastal had 8 reviews, mostly 3–4 stars with negative comments about response time. We:
- Generated new reviews from satisfied clients (ethical, natural process)
- Responded professionally to every negative review, showing Coastal cared about client feedback
- Built the review count to 45+ over 8 months
- Average rating improved from 3.6 to 4.8 stars
Lessons Learned & Replicable Takeaways
This case study reveals patterns that work for any personal injury or other law firm:
1. Practice Area Architecture Is Non-Negotiable
A single “Practice Areas” page doesn’t rank. Separate pages for each injury type do. This is true for bankruptcy, immigration, DUI, and every legal niche. Build out your practice area pages first.
2. Local Pack Compounds Organic Ranking
Local pack optimization (GBP, citations) and organic SEO aren’t separate. They compound each other. Better GBP position → more clicks → more engagement → better organic ranking. Vice versa.
3. Blog Content Only Works With Internal Linking
A blog post that doesn’t link to your practice area pages is wasted effort. Every blog post should link to 3–5 relevant service pages. This passes authority and improves service page rankings.
4. Content Freshness Matters for Competitive Keywords
For competitive keywords (“personal injury lawyer”), Google rewards recently updated content. Quarterly audits of top-performing pages helped Coastal maintain positions.
5. Review Management Is Part of SEO
Reviews impact Google ranking factors (click-through rate, conversion signals) and help convince visitors to call. Generate reviews systematically—don’t leave them to chance.
What’s Next for Coastal Injury Law?
At month 8, Coastal is on pace for 13,000+ organic monthly sessions annually. We’re now focused on:
- Featured snippet optimization: 8 of Coastal’s top-ranking pages could rank in featured snippets (“How much can I get for a car accident” is a perfect candidate). Featured snippets drive 15–20% additional CTR.
- Long-form content for topical authority: Creating comprehensive guides (5,000+ word ultimate guides) on major practice areas to establish clear subject matter expertise.
- Video content: Personal injury clients respond well to video testimonials and how-to videos. We’re planning a 12-video production series.
- Expansion to adjacent markets: Coastal is now ranking well in Orange County. Next step: expand to San Diego and Los Angeles markets with separate location-specific pages.
Conclusion: Replicable Results
Coastal Injury Law doubled their organic traffic in 8 months through systematic, comprehensive SEO work:
- Technical foundation (crawl errors, page speed, schema)
- Practice area architecture (12 new pages targeting specific injury types)
- Local pack dominance (GBP optimization, 45+ citations, review generation)
- Content strategy (80+ blog posts, internal linking to authority pages)
- Link building (45 editorial links from legal directories, local media, health sites)
The result: 593 additional monthly organic sessions, 8–10 additional cases per month, and $963,800 in net profit on a $26,200 investment.
This approach is replicable for personal injury firms of any size, in any geography. Start with practice area pages. Build local authority. Publish content consistently. The results follow.
